Not only are they cheap, but they are thick and durable too! I went to Home Depot a while back and found them 2 for $10 which made for a whopping $5 a panel (try to find another curtain for that!)
They look great pinned up there, but I got a little bored with them as they were so I did a little fixing up. Here is what I came up with...
I used a stencil I found at Hobby Lobby, Anita's Acrylic Craft Paint in Nautical Blue (59 cents a bottle and you will need about a bottle a row), a sea sponge, and some spray adhesive.
I patiently went row after row, lining them up by eye. Since they will be wrinkly hanging up anyway, I figured it wouldn't matter if they weren't perfect.
As for hanging them, you can use these curtain clips from IKEA. They are only $2.99!
This project is not for the faint of heart. It took me about 2 hours per panel to complete. And by the end, I looked like Smurfette. But they are BEAUTIFUL!
Maybe now I'll be brave enough to try a whole wall! What do you think?
And don't forget to go here and leave a comment about your favorite post to be entered to win these adorable potholders (a $20 value!) Drawing will be tomorrow!

ReplyDeleteLOVE these! And, I just might have to steal the idea. :) Between the fact that you used inexpensive drop cloths to the color and design of the stencil - they're amazing! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Tip Junkie. Following you now. :)
Absolutely positively freakin' FABULOUS!! Just LOVE these curtains!!
ReplyDeleteLove the way these came out. LOVE that stencil and the color you used! I think I'll be doing this for my craft room.

ReplyDeleteFantastic job with the curtains. I think you just added $100 to the value and made them unique to the blogging world. Hopping from Katherine's Corner. Nice to meet you TFS
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore this project! I just bought my first drop-cloth last night and let me tell you - I am terrified. I'm about to try and make slip covers for all of my living room furniture! What an undertaking.. Anyway, if all goes well I'd like to add some drop cloth curtains too. Your stencil idea is just what I needed!

Dear Katie,
ReplyDeleteThese drapes are phenomenal and incredibly chic. What an truly beautiful design idea. Lovely!
Thanks for sharing your fabulous tutorial and photos.
Best,
Elise
Great idea!! I can't wait to make some!! ... One question - what is the adhesive spray used for?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Bridget
Hi Bridget! Sorry, I didn't realize that I never mentioned that :o) I used the spray to hold down the stencil each time. It helped a lot with keeping the paint from seeping under the edges. I'll go add that in!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
Okay I have to say these are flippin' fantastic. I'm totally gonna copy them so please feel flattered lol! But can you tell exactly where in Home Depot you find the drop cloths?
ReplyDeletehi kona cupcake :o) You can find the drop cloths in the paint section. In my Home Depot it's right across the aisle from the spray paint. Get the canvas drop clothes. They come in a lot of sizes so be sure to get the right size for what you need. I don't remember what these are. When I got them, they were on sale buy 1 get 1 free. They aren't always though. Big Lots is another place you can find them usually, again with the paint. Good luck and have fun stenciling :o)
ReplyDeleteLove your style. love these curtains. might have to steal the idea or what ever it`s called in blog land. "borrow"? :)
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Kim
I love my dropcloth curtains, and still diggin' the price I paid for them. Just saw some drapes in Restoration Hardware that looks exactly like them but 189 per panel - whoa! Now I think I am on the hunt for some stencil! :)
ReplyDeleteFound you at Kammie's Corner, would love for you to check out Curb Alert! and follow along!
~Tami
I love those curtains. You have inspired me to cover my naked windows! Because - these I can afford. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHow creative, beautiful and inexpensive. I am pinning this!
ReplyDeletethis is beautiful, I can't wait to try it!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you wash the drop cloths first? About to start a set and I'm not sure if I'm supposed wash first. :) Thanks!
ReplyDeletegrets post, thanks you
ReplyDeleteI love these curtains and was inspired by your design. I'm making a set for my sun room. Did you have to let the paint dry between rows? I am a bit worried about paint getting on the underside of the stencil and making a mess. Thank you for posting this wonderful tutorial!
ReplyDeleteLOVE these curtains! :) Quick question though...what exactly was the spray adhesive used for? Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteNever mind...just saw a previous comment :) Thanks again :)
ReplyDeleteHow do you make them soft? From South GA
ReplyDeleteThese are really cute! I'm about to try this, but without the stencils. I'm going to try a very Anthropologie-inspired idea. If they turn out great, then I'll post at my blog www.thewritesteph.com
ReplyDeleteMy blog is about growing up in rural south Ala, but I may expand to some diy projects. I'll be glad to link to you if you would like. -Stephanie
I've never seen anyone mention this problems before -- I've always wanted to do this, but 2 different times that I bought dropcloths, they were seamed together haphazardly, making it unsuitable as a panel... was there a certain brand that you used, or was I just so totally unlucky that I should never consider buying a lottery ticket?
ReplyDeleteI love love love your curtains! They inspired me to make my own, and I even featured them on my blog! Please let me know if you have any problems with that! Thank you so much for the inspiration!

Wonderful curtains, thank you so much for sharing your tips!
ReplyDeleteCan you please tell me about your curtain rod? I'm looking for something 13.5' long, and I like the look of yours a lot.
Thanks!
Hi, I really like dropcloth with the deep blue you have chosen - looks wonderful! I have a question regarding the stencil, though. I bought ad used the exact same stencil on a wall in one of the rooms and was terribly disappointed in its quality! The paint would run through everywhere, destroying the intricate pattern. I wanted to make an accent wall with this stencil, but had to abandon the idea and leave only one top line with 4 stencils. Even that was a trial! Did it work better on a fabric? It sure looks good :)
ReplyDeleteWell those curtains looked perfect to me.. I would love to share blogpost details with others..
