My name is Katie... and I am a ceiling painter.
But this was my first time. Will I do it again? Probably. Will I do it again tomorrow? Most certainly not. Would I do it every day for 4 years? There is not a response to this question that would be appropriate for this blog. Needless to say, Michelangelo is my new hero :o)
The master bathroom that I have been working on is small, uber small. There wasn't a ton of room for a creative stamp on a small budget. So I took to the ceiling. It's practically a big blank canvas anyway, right? (If your big blank canvas had ugly, sharp bumps and lines all over it!)
I am not a free-hander, especially bending over backwards and painting over my head. It would have been a joke. So I used a method similar to the one I used on my little blue french desk.
I started with this stencil. For the life of me I can't find where it came from. It was a google image search, that's all I remember. If you know where it came from, please let me know so I can link to you!
I pasted it into excel and blew it up real big. Then I pieced it together onto the ceiling.
A few people have made me aware that printing shops (like Kinkos) will print them out for a small price, but for me... free was the important part.
In case you want 3 different views of the same things :o)
I took down the first piece and placed a piece of graphite paper in between it and the ceiling and used the tip of a screwdriver to trace around the design. I repeated until the whole design was on the ceiling.
It's faint, but it's there, I promise!!! |
When it came time to paint, there was some room for interpretation :o) It wasn't perfect, but it was a really great guide to pull it all together.
Then I used a bottle of Anita's Acrylic Paint and a cheap-o craft brush to color in the lines.
Best tip that I have for painting in all those dips and divvy's is to load your brush up with paint- it really makes it a lot easier. Don't be skimpy.
After about an hour and LOTS of breaks...
And I have learned an important lesson in blogging (I'm still a beginner so give me a break!!) You should do your room reveal before all of your tutorials. It makes for a bigger surprise :o) I know you have seen pretty much all of this before, but since it's the reveal... I'm gonna show you again!
Just for a little before and after fun! This is what the bathroom looked like when we moved in.
In case you are looking for the tutorials for this room you can find them here:
Cost Breakdown
(for the thrifty-minded side of me :o)
paint- $15
Shower Curtain- $10
Mirror- Already had
Light Fixture- $3 at the restore
New Mat- $3 at a yard sale
Art- Free
Mason Jar Organizer- Free
Ceiling Art- Free
So the total for this project was $31 with the majority of it going to the paint which I have over 3/4 gallon left for more projects! Not a bad deal huh!?
Boog is back home now and improving day by day. We are just in the process of adjusting back to normal. It was nice to have a project to do once they went to bed. It is seriously some sort of weird therapy for me. I can't wait for you to see some of the projects that I have going on around here. It is taking all of my restraint not to put a picture down here!!
Love you guys!!

Wow! What a difference to put that on the ceiling! I love that idea. Now, I just need to get rid of our popcorn ceilings. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing! And I know how you feel about painting ceilings. I painted stripes on my bathroom ceiling and it killed! I can't imagine doing a more complicated design. Our heads are not meant to look up that long, and my arms aren't strong enough to keep above my head that long.
ReplyDeleteps- heres my striped ceiling, if you wanted to see it. http://www.craftyendeavor.com/2011/10/25/bathroom-before-and-after/

ReplyDeleteI just love your bathroom. I love what you did on the ceiling. You make it look so easy, I might try this. Amazing. Thank you for stopping by www.homesweetbutterfly.com today and for your kind words. Appreciate it very much.
Have a great day.

What a nice way to add detail to a small room. I would love to do this around my Dining Room chandelier (I should say I want my husband to do it!). I would imagine it was hard work to paint above your head!

ReplyDeleteYour creativity is awesome! Thanks so much for the stencil idea on the ceiling. I've seen ceilings with the pattern painted all over, but this one large design is ingenious!
